Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation Peter Collier and the WA Liberals are fighting for the Labor Government to reinstate funding for Scouts WA from KidSport.
“This mean-spirited Labor Government changed the criteria of KidSport so that Scouts WA was no longer eligible,” Mr Collier said.
“That is a disgraceful decision, which the Liberals are committed to reversing.
“I have told Scouts WA we will fight for them to be reinstated into the KidSport program, with a commitment worth $1 million per annum, which will support more than 7000 scouts throughout Western Australia.
“We also want land for the Manjedal Activity Centre near Jarrahdale to be gifted to Scouts WA so they can develop buildings and their activities and give long-term security to this important organisation.
“The Scouts movement has been around for generations and taps into the fabric of what local communities are about. More than 7000 youth the length and breadth of Western Australia enjoy the wide range of activities Scouts WA provide.
“The Liberals are fighting for Scouts WA because we support the healthy and active lifestyle they promote, which leads to vibrant communities.
“In an era where screens have become such a big part of our lives, it is important we keep
our local communities engaged. We need to do everything we can to support them with the funding they deserve to provide the outstanding service they deliver, which allows so many of our youth to be involved in fun, local activities.
“Labor proved they are heartless with their decision to axe Scouts WA from access to KidSport funding. This is another example of why Western Australia needs a strong Opposition to provide the checks and balances necessary to hold Labor to account when they make bad decisions. Labor want to gain total control at the election. If they get control of the Legislative Council it will mean there will be no checks and balances.”
