Mirrabooka Mosque

A re-elected Morrison Government will invest $280,000 to complete important works and upgrades at Masjid Al-Taqwa, otherwise known as Mirrabooka Mosque.

Liberal Candidate for Cowan, Vince Connelly, was today joined by Minister for Foreign Affairs, Marise Payne, at Masjid Al Taqwa to make the important announcement.

The works will include:

• Installation of a lift to the female prayer area;
• Installation of security screens to upstairs windows;
• Repairs to fencing around the mosque; and
• General upgrades and upkeep.

“For more than 25 years, Masjid Al Taqwa has been one of the most active mosques in WA, welcoming more than 2,000 worshippers every week,” Mr Connelly said.

“However, with a large number of ageing worshippers and ongoing, targeted crime, accessibility and safety have become increasing concerns.”

Mr Connelly noted that the upgrades will benefit female worshippers in particular, as the installation of a lift will enable older women to access the female prayer room.

“Everyone deserves to practice their faith – free of discrimination – and these works will help worshippers at Masjid Al-Taqwa do exactly that.

“After the 2018 firebombing the Morrison Government provided $85,000 for CCTV and other security measures at the mosque, which has greatly benefited the community.”

Minister Payne said the Masjid Al-Taqwa in Mirrabooka plays a vital role in the diverse and vibrant Cowan community.

“Vince Connelly is a strong supporter and advocate for the Mosque and we were pleased to announce that a re-elected Coalition Government will invest in further upgrades to enhance safety and accessibility for the community,” Minister Payne said.

“This will particularly assist older women in the mosque community.”

Only the Morrison Government has a plan to continue delivering a strong economy and a stronger future for the residents of Cowan.
