$750,000 to back community artists and students at Atwell House

Apr 22, 2022 | Ben Morton, Federal Members

More community artists and local students will be able to join the Melville Community Arts Association, with a re-elected Morrison Government committing $750,000 to help upgrade and expand its premises in Atwell House in Alfred Cove.

Federal Member for Tangney, Ben Morton, said the Association has long advocated for this upgrade so they can continue to service the local Tangney Community.

“I am pleased to back Melville artists and students by making this funding commitment to getting this important project done,” Minister Morton said.

“I have been working with the Minister for the Arts for years to support this association, and I was very pleased to take the Minister for a tour of Atwell House recently.

“I have been a great supporter of the association over many years, securing them solar panels to help with their power costs, a new kiln for the potters group – which currently operate out of a small shed, and new gallery lighting to make art exhibitions even better for our local community.”

The Melville Community Arts Association currently has over 900 active members and the upgrade and expansion would include several new art studios for lessons, gallery upgrades, a new café and dedicated and accessible bathrooms and offices.

The City of Melville has funded detailed project plans and architectural drawings for the project which, in addition to expanded facilities and art studios, includes sustainability initiatives, heritage preservation, and improved inclusion and access.

Project Development Officer and Vice President Barrie-Anne Morgan said that she’s been working for years with Ben to secure this funding.

“Our committee has been calling for the City of Melville and the Federal and State Government to invest in us so we can grow and provide more services through community arts in the future,” Ms Morgan said.

“Ben’s worked hard for us, getting us funding for solar panels, lighting, and a new kiln. I’m so pleased he’s pulled through again, getting a funding commitment for this important upgrade.”

If re-elected, the Morison Government would deliver this project in partnership with the West Australian Government and the City of Melville.

Only the Morrison Government has a real plan to deliver for Tangney and continue to build a strong economy and a stronger future.
