Call for State Government to urgently provide certainty for regional communities amid REX Airlines uncertainty

Jul 30, 2024 | Merome Beard MLA, State News

The State Government needs to develop a comprehensive contingency plan to ensure routes serviced by REX continue uninterrupted in the event of the airline’s services ceasing, according to Merome Beard, MLA for North West Central.

REX Airlines requested a trading halt on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) as it prepares to make a significant announcement, following reports of the airline engaging Deloitte’s restructuring services team.

Beard expressed grave concerns over the potential impact on regional air connectivity if REX Airlines ceases operations.

“REX Airlines provides vital air services to regional areas and not having connectivity for the communities of Carnarvon and Shark Bay in my electorate, and also for Albany and Esperance in the south, is not only a non-negotiable but will have catastrophic impacts ” Ms Beard said.

“The instability within REX is alarming and puts essential transport links at risk.”
Merome emphasised the need for the state government to have a proactive plan to maintain these critical routes, ensuring that regional communities remain connected to the rest of the state.

“The government must have a contingency plan in place to guarantee that the routes serviced by REX can continue if the airline fails,” she said.

“This is crucial for the residents and business owners of Carnarvon and Shark Bay, along Albany and Esperance who rely on these air services for access to health, education, business and tourism opportunities, which over the past two years have been challenged .”

Beard also criticised the state government’s focus on preventing airfare hikes for AFL supporters traveling from Perth to Melbourne, arguing regional travel needs must not be overlooked and needs to be their number one priority.

“The Deputy Premier needs to be less concerned about what airlines are charging for the AFL Grand Final, and more concerned about whether people in Carnarvon, Shark Bay and the regions can get to Perth for medical appointments and essential commitments,” said Ms Beard.

Merome called on Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti and the state government to act swiftly and ensure that regional communities are not left stranded. The uncertainty of REX Airlines underscores the urgent need of the State Labor Government to take action and provide certainty for our regions.
