Member for Riverton
Hi I’m Mike Nahan and I was first elected in 2008 to represent you in the Parliament of Western Australia as your local Member for Riverton.
I have thoroughly enjoyed representing the people of Parkwood, Riverton, Rossmoyne, Shelley and Willetton for the past 8 years and why wouldn’t I? Our area is an amazing place to live, work and enjoy life.
The community has so many strengths – we have some of the best public schools in the nation, we have the most successful senior citizens’ centre in Perth and our sporting culture is second to none.
I am proud to say we’ve had a number of achievements together over my 8 years, with several accomplishments standing out for me:
- After many years of advocating, I successfully secured funding for the complete rebuild of Willetton Senior High School; meaning students will not only learn at one of the State’s best schools, they will learn in state-of-the-art facilities.
- I secured $25m in funding to progress the staged rebuild of Rossmoyne Senior High School, which includes new facilities for the Year 7s. A total of $30.1 million has been invested in the school since 2007.
- After the collapse of the Willetton Sports Club, I worked with a variety of stakeholders and secured $2.3 million for the refurbishment of the Willetton Sports Club facilities, and brand new facilities for the Willetton Bowling Club.
- Along with the community, I held the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council to account with a number of problems plaguing the facility in Canning Vale, causing a regular odour problem for residents. The SMRC eventually upgraded its facilities to stop the issues.
As well as representing the people of Riverton, I am also the Treasurer of Western Australia, the Minister for Energy, and the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Interests. It’s a privilege to serve in these roles, and I have been working hard to stop WA’s GST rip-off, implement important energy reforms and engage with our culturally diverse community.
I migrated to Australia in 1978 from the United States and arrived in Western Australia in 1982, having worked in many different roles for a number of organisations around the world before entering State Parliament. I have a PhD in Economics from ANU, and in 2000 I was awarded a Centenary Medal by the Australian Government for my contribution to public policy in Australia.
My wife is Dr Nyuk Nahan, a professor of law, who is originally from Malaysia and together we are the proud parents of two adult children; our daughter Keavy who has completed her masters in the USA, and our son Key, who has completed podiatry at the University of Western Australia. I bring with me a lifetime of experience, leadership and values as a parent, a State public servant, an economist, a university lecturer, a director, a journalist and a proven champion for the local community, to proudly serve as your local MP, and as a Minister of the Crown.
It remains an absolute honour to represent the Riverton community, and if re-elected this year, I also look forward to welcoming Bull Creek to the electorate, and working to achieve great things together.
